Mine Blast in Israel

On February 6, 11-year-old Daniel Yuval from Tel Aviv was playing in the fresh snow in the Golan Heights when he stepped on landmine and lost his leg. His 12 year-old sister also sustained shrapnel injuries.

The incident has prompted many in Israel and around the world to ask not only whether the minefield was properly fenced, but why hundreds of thousands of mines are buried there in the first place.

Yalew was working as an administrator and supporting his wife and two daughters when civil war erupted in Ethiopia. The government called upon everyone, even those with no military training, to fight. While on patrol, Yalew was badly beaten and shot thirteen times by revolutionaries. He lost his arm all the way to the shoulder and nearly bled to death.
